Over 250 pizzas airlifted to help feed Kauai in Hurricane Lowell relief effort

Rainbow Helicopters joined The Salvation Army and Domino’s Hawaii in the Hurricane Lowell relief effort, flying more than 250 pizzas from Honolulu to Kauai to help feed families sheltering across the island.
Hurricane Lowell relief, support for Kauai
Hurricane Lowell left Kauai with widespread destruction and power outages, and families across the island moved into designated refuge centers to wait out the recovery. The Salvation Army Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Division activated its Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) team to organize a mass distribution at centers between Kapaa and Waimea.
3 Helicopters, 255 Pizzas
The pizza flight departed Honolulu on three Rainbow Helicopters aircraft and touched down in Lihue at 4 p.m. Thursday. Domino’s Hawaii donated 255 pizzas — enough, The Salvation Army said, to feed 1,000 people.
Some of the pizza was also handed out to travelers stranded at Lihue Airport, where intermittent power outages had triggered Transportation Security Administration screening delays that left some passengers waiting in line for seven hours.
Why Helicopters?
When a storm takes out roads and harbors, aircraft become one of the few ways to move people and supplies quickly. Rainbow Helicopters aircraft usually carry visitors over Hawaii’s coastlines and valleys — but the same fleet, pilots and fuel can be pointed at a relief mission on short notice, reaching places that are hard to get to any other way.
Our kuleana to the community
Supporting Hawaii communities in a crisis is a kuleana (responsibility) the Rainbow team takes seriously. After the Maui wildfires, the company’s food drive campaign gathered 43,000 pounds of food and supplies for the Maui Relief Fund. When Hurricane Lala hit earlier this year, Rainbow airlifted 44 disaster cleanup kits of PPE and sanitization supplies to South Point residents.

“To have partners that are willing to step in and really do whatever it takes to meet the needs of the community, Domino’s Hawaii and Rainbow Helicopters didn’t skip a beat,” said Heather Wong, corporate relations director for The Salvation Army.
“We are just like really happy to hopefully bring some joy after the hard weekend and Monday and just hopefully bring over some good food and bring it over to the shelters so people can really maybe have a smile on their face after a hard weekend,” said Nicole Battjes, owner of Rainbow Helicopters.
